Diabetes mellitus or diabetes is a long term or chronic disease which is caused by high level of blood sugar in the body because of insulin secretion. Glucose is actually needed by our body as the source of energy for our brain and cells that create muscles in our body. Diabetes is divided into two, diabetes type 1 and diabetes type 2. Diabetes Type 1

Diabetes mellitus type 1 is caused by the damage in pancreatic organ. Because of that damage, the body does not have enough insulin hormone to distribute glucose in blood to all of the cells in the body. When glucose cannot be distributed to be changed into energy, it will settle in the blood. For a long time, this situation will make the level of glucose in blood increase and it causes diabetes mellitus.

So that people who are suffered with this kind of diabetes rely on artificial insulin to keep their blood sugar levels stable. Here are the factors which can trigger diabetes mellitus type 1:

  1. Have genetic factors of people with diabetes.

  2. Have problems with immune system in their bodies.

  3. Lack of nutrition.

  4. Attack of specific virus which are able to damage pancreatic organ.

Diabetes Type 2

Diabetes type 2 is caused by unhealthy life style. People with this kind of diabetes does not have any problem with pancreatic organ. So that insulin hormone can be produced according the body’s need. But the problem is the cells in body have a problem with insulin resistance or not sensitive with insulin hormone anymore. Because of that problem, insulin problem cannot distribute glucose to body.

Factors and Causes People Get a Risk of Diabetes

  1. Heredity

People who have genetic factors of diabetes in their family, tend to have a higher risk of the same disease compared to those who do not. The percentage of risk people get risk of diabetes depends on the amount of family members who have the disease. The more family members have diabetes, the more risks he or she can get. There is 5% risk of getting diabetes if your parents or your siblings have diabetes. The risk increases to 50% if you have obesity.

There are various definitions of unhealthy dietary habit. In this case, unhealthy dietary habit means eating a lot of sugar. Eating a lot of foods which contain a lot of fats and cholesterol is also able to trigger diabetes. It is because those kinds of foods can make you have obesity.

Almost 80% people who have diabetes are the ones who also have obesity. It is because obesity increase insulin hormone in the body, and the fats do not respond insulin well. That is why obesity can be called as the main factor people get diabetes mellitus.
